GENDER IS NOT ON MY AGENDA

- BY PAT NOLAN

DAVY FITZGERALD has moved to clarify Mags D’arcy’s role with the Wexford hurlers.

It was reported last week that D’arcy (inset), a four-time All-ireland camogie winner with the county, had been appointed as goalkeeping coach to the senior hurlers.

Fitzgerald though, said it was more of a case of her cutting her teeth by coming on board.

The Wexford boss explained: “It’s hilarious. The amount of publicity it got was unreal.

“This is the exact story: delighted to have Mags in. She helps the goalkeeping coach Noel Considine and is doing a great job. She helps him out, she’s in to learn as much as she can.

“She helps in the coaching and I’ve given her a few one on ones. I often pick lads out that I’m not happy with and a few different things and she’s a more than capable lady.

“We’re delighted to have her on board, so we are. She’ll learn a lot from the lads.”

He added: “She is in to help out the guys and she will add to our set up. We’re not afraid if anyone can make a contribution to Wexford.

“There’s lady physios there, I think there are a few girls on the analysis with Kilkenny, they know their stuff so if someone is good enough, it doesn’t matter their gender.

“In the GAA we’re happy enough to go that way, not a bother.”
