HIT ON HUTCH FOILED

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR and SAOIRSE MCGARRIGLE

GARDAI foiled another Kinahan assassination bid on the Hutch family when elite officers swooped moments before a hit team struck.

Jonathan Hutch, a relative of Gerry “The Monk”, is believed to have been the intended target – and this was the latest of several attempts on his life.

He survived a murder bid in Spain in August 2016 when a cartel gunman wrongly shot dead innocent holidaymaker and dad-of-three Trevor O’neill.

Yesterday officers launched a fresh blitz on properties in Dublin linked to two suspects arrested moments before the attempted hit was due to take place Jonathan Hutch at funeral of Eddie Hutch Snr in Gorey, Co Wexford, in the early hours of yesterday.

Elite armed gardai swooped on the suspects, aged 27 and 25, after cars were left parked in a field in the Millands area of the town. One man was picked up at the scene and another arrested in a follow up search.

Both men are well-known associates of the Kinahan cartel and are originally from the Sheriff Street area of Dublin.

One has 100 previous convictions and is known for violent robberies. His list of crimes include drug dealing, blackmail, extortion, assault and burglary. The second man is thought to be the relative of a previous murder victim and is known as an extremely violent thug.

Two loaded guns and ammunition were seized by gardai as well as getaway cars. A source said: “This was an imminent threat to life with the guns ready and fuel to burn out the cars.

“Men were ready to go and strike at the Hutch family but gardai received information and halted another strike – that is upwards of 50 murders stopped now.” Jonathan Hutch had fled to Spain after his brother Gareth was shot dead in Dublin in May 2016. But he later returned home and was living in Wexford.

Yesterday’s arrests followed a similar operation last Saturday as officers arrested three men, allegedly preventing an attack on Patsy Hutch.

Residents in Gorey said yesterday they were deeply shocked with the arrival of the Kinahan-hutch feud in their town.

Mum-of-four Colette Nolan aded: “It’s all because of the new bypass. The city is coming closer to the country areas. These people are able to come in and get out very easily.”
