‘More help for Metro families’

- BY CLAIRE SCOTT

A COUNCILLOR has slammed the Government for not offering help to the victims of the Metro blaze.

In the latest update from the hotel, they have announced they will no longer be paying for emergency accommodation from next Wednesday and will also end tenancies from that date onwards.

As a goodwill gesture, the Metro is offering €1,000 per apartment and €2,000 to the residents whose apartments and belongings on the 10th and 13th floors were destroyed by the blaze. Ballymun Independent councillor Noeleen Reilly said the tenants are now being left to fend for themselves without any Dublin City Council or Government assistance.

She added: “This leaves tenants in a very worrying situation as the State has given them zero assistance in terms of helping with accommodation.

“Dublin City Council and the Housing Minister now need to intervene and fast track Housing Assistance Payment for these families so they are not left stranded.

“There also needs to be a complete review of the strategy for the aftermath of a disaster like this as it seems none exists and families are just expected to fend for themselves.

“The whole situation has been very distressing for all those involved and the response from the State has only added to that distress.”
