Revolvers found by Garda team

- BY CLAIRE SCOTT

A MAN has appeared in court accused of possessing firearms and ammunition.

William Mccarthy faced two charges at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court for having revolvers and one for having ammunition.

The 27-year-old, of Spencer Dock in the city, faced a special sitting yesterday morning.

It follows the Garda interception of two vehicles during an operation at Monastery Gate Avenue, Clondalkin, West Dublin on Friday evening.

Two Smith and Wesson revolvers were discovered as well as 10 rounds of ammunition.

Mr Mccarthy was arrested along with two other men in their 20s and a 28-year-old woman.

Det Anthony Kennedy, the head garda in the arrest, told the court the accused made no reply to the charges after caution.

Defence solicitor Declan Fahy said there was no application for bail at this stage.

Judge Alan Mitchell remanded Mccarthy in custody until Friday when he will appear before Clover Hill District Court.

He was also granted legal aid.

In a separate incident, a truck driver appeared in court following the seizure of €1.8million worth of drugs in Dublin Port. Alvydus Simkus, with an address at Smithslane, Cathedral Place, Limerick appeared before Dublin District Court charged with three counts of possession and three counts of possession with intent to sell and supply.

The 55-year-old was arrested on Saturday morning after gardai found cocaine, MDMA powder and ketamine in two compartments within a truck the accused was allegedly driving from Liverpool into Dublin.

Dete Ronan Doolan of the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau told the court the vehicle was brought to Customs House for examination where the drugs were recovered.

He argued that given the seriousness of the charges the accused should not be granted bail.

Defence solicitor Andrew Vallely told the court the accused, originally from Lithuania, has lived at his current address since 2005, has three children in third-level education and a wife to support and would not be a flight risk.

He also recommended Mr Simkus’ passport be confiscated prior to his hearing to satisfy garda concerns.

Judge Alan Mitchell refused bail citing the seriousness of the charges against Simkus.

He is due to appear before Clover Hill District Court on Friday.
