A LAOIS inter-county GAA player was last night in a serious condition in hospital after being assaulted at a taxi rank.

Daniel “Dicey” O’reilly from Graiguecullen, who is in his 20s, suffered serious head injuries during the attack in Carlow town in the early hours of Monday.

The victim is understood to have been trying to get into a taxi in the Potato Market area of the town when he was attacked by a number of people shortly after 1am.

Mr O’reilly, is believed to have played for his county in the final of Division Four of the Allianz Football League on Saturday afternoon, has been described as a “nice quiet chap”.

One local, who did not wish to be named, said he is well liked in the town and a lovely young man.

They added: “He is a genuinely lovely, quiet chap.

“People are saying he was trying to get a taxi when he was attacked. There’s talk that it was unprovoked.

“There are CCTV cameras in that area so hopefully those responsible were caught on it and will be tracked down by gardai.”

A Garda spokesman told the Irish Mirror: “Gardai in Carlow attended the scene of an incident at the Potato Market, Carlow on the 2/4/2018.

“A male in his early 20s sustained serious head injuries during an altercation involving a number of people shortly after 1am.

“The injured man was removed to St Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny, where his condition is understood to be serious.”
