I’VE GOT TO SERVE MY TIME

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

JOEY CARBERY reckons Leinster are in a hurry to win an historic treble this season - but he’s in no rush to be the first-choice 10 or 15 for province or country.

Carbery, 22, has done an excellent job as a closer for Leinster and Ireland, coming on for Johnny Sexton to see out important victories – such as at Twickenham on St Patrick’s Day, and last Sunday’s Champions Cup quarter-final.

Already a Grand Slam winner, the gifted Athy youngster has his sights set on European and PRO14 success before the campaign is out.

“Definitely,” he said. “We have huge confidence in what we can do.

“That’s our goal in a great place to get it.

We’re taking it week by week.

“If you look too far ahead, it could be the end.

“Getting that taste [ for winning] will drive us younger guys. We’ve that experience – but also we know how much needs to go into it.”

However Carbery is willing to look longer term when it comes to his own personal wants, rather than that of his teams.

Game time has been limited this season – his 80 minutes against the Ospreys two weeks ago was his first full run-out since October, though he did fracture his arm against Fiji the following month.

Carbery said: “As far as being number one, whether it be 10 or 15, playing every week we’re for Leinster and Ireland...i want to achieve and be as good as I possibly can be.

“That’s the end goal, the main ambition. It’s very tough to put a timeline on it. You just don’t know what will happen – one injury could change it all.”

His mindset is such that he’s sad that Rob Kearney (left) has only signed a contract to the end of the World Cup.

“He’ll be a huge loss to Leinster and Irish rugby,” said Carbery. “I’ll be sad to see him leave but it’ll be great to have him for the World Cup”

Others, including Andrew Conway and Jordan Larmour, will have a big say in that selection too, of course.

“Hopefully, by me being behind the two of them [Sexton and Kearney], it will make them play better,” said Carbery, insisting he is pushing those ahead of him.

“I’m very ambitious. If I could be number one choice, I would be. I can’t be impatient. Otherwise, it won’t happen. I’m pretty happy with where I am at the moment.”

“Obviously, I’d love to be first choice full-back. But, it’s pretty hard to get ahead of Rob when he’s playing as well as he is and has as much experience as he’s got.

“I don’t want to be pushing just to be number one. I want to help the team out – and team always comes first.

“People say I need more game time, but the teams are winning. It’s not like we’re losing, or not going well.”
