RTE star refuses to rule out running

- BY SHARON MCGOWAN and EMMA MCMENAMY

MIRIAM O’callaghan has become the hot favourite to be the next President of Ireland.

The odds on who is to take over from Michael D Higgins have seen the RTE star jump from 8/1 to 6/1 this week.

And yesterday the presenter refused to rule out running for the Aras.

However, she also insisted the reason she isn’t doing her summer chat show this year is because she will be filming a documentary on the Troubles.

Miriam told the Irish Mirror: “We have a wonderful president. It’s 50 years since the Troubles in Northern Ireland broke out, I have been covering the Troubles for two decades or more.

“It’s very important to me so

I asked if I could make this documentary.

“They said they would like me to make it but we would be going to places like Alabama, where the civil rights movement started. It simply isn’t physically possible for me to do a live chat show, look after my family, do everything else and go to Alabama to film a headline documentary for RTE.”

When asked if her family have discussed the presidency, the mum of eight said: “I’ve got young boys who really just want to talk about the Liverpool and Man City match last night.” Her comments came Michael D Higgins after presidential hopeful Gerard Craughwell, at 33/1, called on the 57-year-old and any other candidates to declare their intentions.

Boylesports have Mairead Mcguinness, Fergus Finlay and Emily O’reilly at 8/1 and Bertie Ahern at 9/1.

However, Gerry Adams has drifted to 20/1 after Mary-lou Mcdonald suggested he wouldn’t be standing.

■ Miriam was launching the annual Lauralynn Heroes Ball, which will take place at Dublin’s Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge on May 12. All proceeds go towards the children’s hospice.
