WE WILL NEED TO SCORE MOR THAN BEFORE..

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

ANDY MORAN believes he knows what it will take to beat Dublin in an All-ireland final.

The Dubs have won all five of their appearances in the Croke Park decider in the past seven years.

Mayo’s 1-16 total last year was the highest score managed against the Blues in that period but Dublin came up with 1-17, their highest score in that time, too.

“Against Dublin, I’ve always had this 20-point marker in my head,” said the Mayo veteran, who was the 2017 Footballer of the Year.

“If you get to 20 points you think you have a chance to beat them – and we got to 19.

“It was the highest we had got to, I think we got to 1-14 previously.

“They still could get to 20 points - and the only team that have beaten Dublin (in a final) have got to 20 points.

“That was Kerry in the (2017) National League, and I think that’s where you need to get to.”

Moran reckons

Dublin’s opponents have no choice but to be brave to have a chance of toppling them from their position as the best team in the country.

“You have to,” he stressed.

“Galway went more defensive against them last week and Dublin got 18 points - and 18 points is hard to get in a game, but they also had three good goal chances.

“The way the game has gone and the way Dublin has gone...

“We don’t play defensive football, we never have and you can’t if you’re going to get the big one.”
