MATT WANTS GLOSS FINISH

- BY

MATT TARGETT has told his Fulham team-mates that automatic promotion will be won on their own sweat; not on the mistakes of rivals.

The Cottagers were the big winners on a weekend that saw Cardiff and Aston Villa both drop three points.

This hard-fought victory y at in-form Sheffield eld Wednesday moved the e Cottagers to just two points behind stuttering Cardiff, with the second automatic promotion slot t behind Wolves bang up for grabs.

Targett, on loan from Premier League Southampton, said the Fulham players recognised the significance of Saturday’s game.

“With Cardiff and Villa losing this was probably the biggest game of the season,” Targett (above) said.

“It was a massive chance for us to chase down Cardiff.

“We can only do our thing and keep on winning and see where that gets us but if we do I think we’re going to get into the top two.

“You can’t concentrate on anyone else. You have to do your job yourself, that’s the most important thing. If other teams can do us a favour, though, that’s a massive boost.”

The 22-year-old left-back, who has struck up a good understanding with winger Ryan Sessegnon, says Fulham have enough quality to prosper in the Premier League.

He said: “The way we play is a Premier League style – we get the ball down and pass it through the thirds. I think if we do get to the Premier League it won’t be a massive step-up.

“The quality will be higher but we can cause some teams damage as well.”

Sessegnon set up Aleksandar Mitrovic for the winner 12 minutes from time to finally break the home side’s resistance.

Fulham could have made the game safe with substitut e Neesk Neeskens Kebano having thr three glorious opportun nities in the final 10 m minutes to add a s second.

But Kebano, who h had replaced another sub substitute Floyd Ayite, could only fire over, wide, and then straight at Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.

Owls full-back Jack Hunt said Wednesday’s season has been wrecked by injuries.

He said: “There are a lot of people that we have missed this season. I genuinely believed before Carlos ( former boss Carvalhal) went that we could have had a play-off push.

“It wasn’t going the way we wanted but in December Fulham weren’t where they wanted to be – they are now.”
