I’ve heard nothing from him in a year, I believe he’s dead

A HEARTBROKEN mother whose son vanished on a hiking trail in the US a year ago doesn’t believe he is still alive.

Carmel O’sullivan has heard nothing from David who was last seen on the Pacific Crest Trail in April last year.

The 25-year-old was inspired to take on the challenge having read the book Wild, which also became a film starring Reese Witherspoon.

When asked if she believes her son is still alive, Mrs O’sullivan, from Midleton, Co Cork said: “No, I’m afraid I don’t.

“He’s a year gone and there’s no activity in his bank account and he certainly wouldn’t have disappeared. He’s a very loyal child. He wouldn’t do this to us.

“David had read the book before the movie and it left a good impression on him. He told us last September he was going to do it.

“It’s 2,500 miles and takes you from the Mexican border all the way up to Canada and takes approximately six months. You carry everything with you.

“You try to navigate mountains and lakes and forests and the Mojave Desert. It’s very, very popular. Initially I said no to him doing it.

“He thought he would never be able to take six months off work to do this again.” She said David arrived in Idyllwild where he arrived on April 5 but since then nothing.

Mrs O’sullivan told RTE’S Ryan Tubridy: “The last time we heard from him was April 7, 2017. It is assumed that HOPES have risen that an Irish tourist missing for a month in India may be alive.

Liga Skromane, 33, was reportedly seen around 90km from Kovalam beach in Kerala, where she was last spotted. A he didn’t get very far from there, because he wasn’t seen.

“Everything was going fine and he was leaving on the morning of April 7. And he hasn’t been heard or seen since. There have been a number of false sightings.
