A COMMUNITY has been left in shock after a woman was killed in a tragic accident just week’s before her daughter’s wedding.

Anne Mccann passed away on Monday following the incident in the close-knit town of Altamuskin, near Sixmilecross in Co Tyrone.

It is understood the 52-year-old died from her injuries after she attempted to stop her vehicle from rolling on to the road close to her home.

Sinn Fein MLA Declan Mcaleer, who is a personal friend of the family, described it as a “tragic incident”.

He told the Mirror: “I visited the family home on Tuesday and they are just besides themselves with grief.

“They feel it’s surreal. The wider community is just numb with pain as this is the second tragedy to hit the club and community this year.

“A neighbour of the deceased, Kathleen Mcgarvey, died in an accident on the A5 in January.

“Altamuskin is a strong community and the family are part of the Errigal Ciaran GAA club and the Drumquin club where Anne hailed from.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathy to Colm [Anne’s husband] and the whole family at this time.

“And I know the Errigal Ciaran club and the community will rally and support the family now and in difficult times ahead.”

In the months prior to the accident Anne and Colm had been celebrating the arrival of their first grandchild and were busy preparing for their daughter’s wedding in a matter of weeks.

SDLP MLA for West Tyrone Daniel Mccrossan said the incident has stunned people in the surrounding area.

He added: “It’s a very tragic incident, one that has shocked the entire community.

“This is a community that is very tight-knit and very much focused on working together to improve the lives of those living in the area and from what I’ve heard Anne worked very hard for her community.

“This is wholly tragic, a horrific incident that has shocked everyone.

CO TYRONE YESTERDAY

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends and the wider community at this time.”

Altamuskin Community Centre posted on its Facebook page: “Due to the passing of our lovely friend, neighbour and committee member Anne Mccann there will be no activities in the centre until after the funeral.

“We offer our condolences to Colm, Darren, Tanya, Ciaran, Una, Scott, Cathy & Cillian and the extended family. RIP.”

Local GAA club Errigal Ciaran wrote: “Due to the untimely and tragic passing of Anne Mccann all club activities are cancelled until after the funeral.

“Anne’s remains will return to her home at 7.30pm approx this evening. Ar dheis de go raibh a hanam uasal.”

Anne’s funeral is due to take place on Friday.
