I’ve Cot lot to thank Mick for!

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

BARRY COTTER has thanked Mick Mccarthy for the “best day of his life” even though it ended in the Ipswich boss quitting.

Cotter, 19, joined the Championship club from League of Ireland outfit Limerick on a three-year deal at the end of the January window.

And having impressed the former Republic of Ireland manager in U23 games, Cotter was catapulted into the starting XI for the 1-0 win over Barnsley.

But when Mccarthy substituted the teenager early in the second-half, boos rang out at Portman Road - something Mccarthy later described as “pathetic”.

But in the course of that post-match press conference, the 59-year-old announced that he was quitting with immediate effect.

Mccarthy had indicated last month that he would be leaving the Tractor Boys at the end of the season.

On social media today, Cotter wrote: “Yesterday was a very proud day for my family and I, making my full professional debut under Mick Mccarthy’s Ipswich Town.

“Words cannot describe the respect I have for him, buying me from Ireland and giving me the opportunity to go out on such a big stage and express myself so soon.

“It has been a pleasure working for him. Thank you for giving me the best day of my life so far.”

Cotter added: “I’d like to thank the fans for welcoming me with open arms and for the standing ovation at the end. Also, I’m happy to have started my career with three points at home!.”
