Galway singer Ultan Conlon is gearing up for a headline Dublin show to launch his new album of songs Last Days of The Night Owl.

Conlon has spent most of the past year recording his third album and gigging in Nashville and Los Angeles where he played the Viper Room and the Largo club.

Five songs from Ultan Conlon’s last album Songs of Love So Cruel were included in the award winning film Songs for Amy which starred Sean Maguire (inset) and was released in 2014.

Fresh from a ninedate Irish tour with Eddie Reader, Conlon will play six UK shows in April including gigs at Liverpool Philharmon­ic and Norwich Arts Centre as special guest of Mary Coughlan who along with John Martyn has recorded Ultan’s songs. The Beat: What has been your best gig so far?

Conlon: In Largo in Los Angeles sharing a stage with Jackson Browne and Shelby Lynne and The Watkins Family Hour. The Beat: Tell us about your new/latest record? Conlon: It’s my third studio album and was recorded in Galway, Sheffield and Nashville. It’s done more traveling than me.

The Beat: Describe your music in one sentence? Conlon: My music can sometimes be delicate and like a good friend appreciate­s a good listener. The Beat: What are you listening to at the moment? Conlon: I am listening to Jason Isbell and The War On Drugs. The Beat: What Irish acts do you rate? Conlon: Right now Mary Coughlan, Vickers Vimy, Cormac O Caoimh, Marc Oreilly, The Saw Doctors and Track Dogs. The Beat: What has been your favorite moment as a musician? Conlon: Making an old man cry during a performanc­e of a song of mine called Dance to Paper Roses. The Beat: What’s in store for you for the rest of 2018? Conlon: Lots more gigs to promote Last Days Of The Night Owl in Ireland, The UK, France and America.

Owls play Dublin Whelan’s on Saturday April 28 with special guests Vickers Vimy and Mary Coughlan.

The pair will duet with Ultan on his new song ‘A Weak Heart Like Mine’ which features on the new album Last Gays of The Night Owl.
