Sick ‘rape list’ of girls found in boys toilets at secondary

Mum’s fury at third incident in 2 weeks

- BY OLIVIA KELLEHER

A MOTHER has told of her anger after a sick “rape list” of girls was found in the boys toilets of a secondary school.

Davis College in Mallow, Co Cork, is investigating the depraved scoring system which warned the student “with the most ticks will get raped”.

The woman said yesterday: “What goes through the minds of young men to do this?

“I can’t even imagine what is inside someone’s head that can write something like that. These boys think it’s funny and put girls’ names on the wall.”

The mum said the list could have been the work of one or several pupils but she told Neil Prendeville on Cork’s Red FM the incident wasn’t an isolated one.

She said: “This is the third time this type of thing has gone up on a wall in the last couple of weeks. I don’t know if it’s the same names but it’s the same thing.

“It beggars belief. These girls knew their names had been put up on that wall.”

In a statement, school head Stephen Gilbert said: “We are taking this issue extremely seriously and immediately took steps to address it with both the affected students and student body at large.

“A thorough investigation is underway to investigate who may have been the author of the piece. We can confirm that this matter has also been referred to the gardai.”

The principal said the list was removed as soon as authorities were alerted and each of the girls was spoken to.

He added: “Our social, personal and health education teachers will be facilitating discussions on this subject with every class.

“We want students and parents to know we will continue to provide a safe learning environment for our students.”

A source indicated that the young women were very upset due to the publicity the incident has attracted.

The Rape Crisis Network Ireland yesterday said it was appalled at the incident. Spokeswoman Cliona Saidlear added: “The threat to rape a child is such a serious matter. It should be considered by the gardai and an investigation opened if appropriate.”
