Girl blasts rape list in boys’ toilet
Varadkar joins outcry over sick joke
A GIRL at the school where a depraved “rape list” was posted in the boys’ toilets has said pupils need to learn about consent and realise sex assault is no joking matter.
On Thursday, it emerged a notice with names was written on the wall of lavatories in Davis College, Cork, asking lads to put a tick next to their favourite.
It included a sick message that the one with the most ticks would be raped.
Gardai are now investigating who pinned up the notice at the co-ed school in Mallow.
A teenage student, who was not one of the girls named, yesterday said she hoped the story would educate parents and pupils.
She added: “Threatening rape is just so serious. Boys need to learn they can’t talk about girls like that. A guy sent [the image] to one of the girls on the list to show her.
“He was like, ‘Look at this – it is up’.
“I think their whole mentality is based on attractiveness or something and they don’t realise how serious this is.”
The student also told the Neil Prendeville show on Cork’s Red FM: “I think people need to understand what is going on and actually be concerned for the safety of us girls. They [the boys] just see people doing this and think it looks fun. They are not being taught about what consent is.”
Last night it emerged three “rape lists” were found at the school.
Principal Stephen Gilbert confirmed: “Management has now been made aware there were two other lists and a thorough investigation is under way to investigate who may have been the author(s).”
The girls named on the list yesterday said they were “disappointed” by media coverage, which they insisted did not consider “the impact publicity would have on us as individuals”.
Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the news was “very worrying”. He added: “It emphasises the need to modernise and improve relationships and sexual education in our schools.”
