‘STOLEN CAR’ MOWS DOWN MUM OF TWO

A YOUNG mum of two was killed yesterday when she was struck by a suspected stolen car.

The woman, named locally as Lisa Gow and believed to be in her 30s, died on the Ballysilla­n Road in North Belfast at around 11am.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene as reports emerged yesterday the vehicle was being pursued by police.

The Ombudsman yesterday confirmed they had investigat­ors at the scene of the crash.

A number of other vehicles were damaged in the incident.

North Belfast MLA William Humphrey said it was “appalling that the death on Ballysilla­n Road was caused by a suspected stolen car”.

The DUP representa­tive added: “The life of a local woman has been taken as a result of this reckless crime. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family who have been suddenly and Police officer inspects car on Ballysilla­n Road terribly bereaved. I understand the car also crashed into other vehicles which may have caused injuries to others.”

The Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the scene and the female pedestrian was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital where she passed away.

Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly extended his sympathy to the family and friends of the victim.

He said: “The community was shocked to hear of the tragic death which occurred in the Ballysilla­n Road area of North Belfast.

“This is the second tragedy to occur in North Belfast in just over 12 hours.

“I want to extend my condolence­s to the family and friends of the woman killed and ask anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the incident to come forward with that informatio­n.”

SDLP North Belfast councillor Paul Mccusker said: “Death drivers have no place in our society and serve no other purpose than to terrorise communitie­s.

“My thoughts go out to the family and I would appeal for anyone with informatio­n come forward to the PSNI.”

A spokesman for the NI Ambulance Service said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a call at 10.55 this morning following reports of an RTC involving a pedestrian on the Ballysilla­n Road,belfast.

“One emergency ambulance crew and one officer attended the incident. The Charity Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.

“Following assessment and treatment at the scene by paramedics, one patient is being conveyed to the Royal Victoria Hospital.”

A Police Ombudsman spokesman added: “The PSNI informed us its officers had been involved in a pursuit of a vehicle involved in the collision.

“A stinger device is also believed to have been used by police.

“We are now investigat­ing the actions taken by police in the period prior to the collision.

“Our investigat­ors have been at scene and are continuing to make enquiries.

“I would like to take this opportunit­y to express our sympathies to the family and friends of the woman who died.” to
