Jose’s missing the real point
JOSE MOURINHO’S greatest achievement this season would be in collecting a points tally that would have won the Premier League in nine of its 26 previous campaigns – and still not getting a sliver of credit.
That is assuming their average per game is maintained in the final four matches.
It would be collecting a points tally that could easily be the highest since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and still not THE debate on VAR – whether it is a system that should be used or not – is over.
We all understand that refereeing mistakes are part of the game, but there is no stopping the use of VAR in top-flight football. Yet the Premier League has decided to garnering a shred of praise. It would be collecting a points tally that exceeds the ones achieved by SIX of Ferguson’s title-winning Manchester United sides and still not getting a jot of public acclaim.
Manchester City have shifted the landscape for United. The pragmatism and points-gathering of Mourinho (above) no longer cuts it.
Like it or not, he needs to find some panache next time around. delay its implementation. Why? It is simply delaying the inevitable.
A World Cup Final cannot now be decided by a rank, bad refereeing decision – but destiny in the Premier League can.
VAR is coming to the Premier League and there is no point in putting it off.
THE ECB wants to introduce a new 100-ball format for what we all assumed was going to be a T20 city-based tournament, starting in 2020. It will consist of 15 traditional six-ball overs followed by a final 10-ball over. “This is a fresh and exciting idea that will appeal to a younger audience and attract new fans,” said ECB chief executive officer Tom Harrison.
Or it could just be a gimmick that will not make one iota of difference to the tournament’s popularity.
