v DANNY KANE was ice cool on his league debut having been brought out of cold storage by Cork City boss John Caulfield. v v Griffin keeping him out of the side, the former Reading man having made the left-back spot his own since Kevin O’connor left for Preston last summer.

But Griffin’s groin injury meant Kane was pitched into the melting pot for his league debut in

Friday’s top-of-the-table win over Dundalk.

And he is likely to retain his place for tonight’s clash at Shamrock Rovers. Caulfield (inset) said: “I wouldn’t have any concerns over Danny. He’s a fantastic young fella, trains every day and has a fantastic attitude. At the same time, it’s difficult coming into a 7,000 crowd and making your debut against the team that had been top and a team that scores loads of goals.

“As a manager, you’re always edgy and have to trust the guy and the work they do on the training ground. You have to believe them and ultimately they do step up and deliver.”

Cork’s defence has been revamped in recent weeks with Conor Mccarthy, Sean Mcloughlin, Colm Horgan and now Kane given opportunit­ies. And while the average age of that defensive wall is only 21, they have proved a formidable unit and are still to concede a league goal at home this season.

Kane played plenty of academy games in Huddersfie­ld’s youth set-up but is now getting his head around the jump to men’s football.

Caulfield said: “He mightn’t have played much but he’s delighted he joined us, delighted with the way the club is done, the training and profession­alism.
