Toby drives new series

TOBY Jones has written his own telly series, perhaps inspired by Mackenzie Crook’s magnificent Detectorists – in which Jones co-starred.

The dark comedy was among a raft of new commissions for BBC2 announced last night.

They include a show where celebs compete to avoid the tab for dinner and a documentary in which Homeland star David Harewood tells about being sectioned 30 years ago.

Don’t Forget the Driver, in which he plays coach driver and single dad Peter Green. Set in Bognor Regis, it follows lovable Peter as his life turns to chaos when a dead body washes ashore.

“We hope that Don’t Forget the Driver will be an unusually funny drama about small-town Britain and the joys of coach travel,” Jones says. BBC2 boss Patrick Holland describes the show as “beautifully observed, layered, painfully funny”.

I’ll Get This has no host and no audience. Instead, five celebrities go out for dinner. At the restaurant, they place their bank cards in the middle of the table before they eat, drink and get merry.

As the drinks flow, they compete in games – those who win can remove their card. The losing celeb picks up the whole bill. It’s going to be an expensive night for someone...

Meanwhile, David Harewood will discuss the mental breakdown he suffered at the age of 23, when he was sectioned and treated with antipsychotic medication.

In an hour-long documentary, he will try to piece together what happened to him, much of which he does not remember, by visiting key locations from his breakdown, and meeting the people who witnessed his decline, including friends and family. richly
