THE husband of Natalia Karaczyn appeared in court yesterday charged with the mum-of-three’s murder.

The body of the 30-year-old from Poland was found on the outskirts of Sligo on Tuesday – two days after she went missing.

Sligo District Court heard Rafal Karaczyn, 32, made no reply when the charge of murdering his wife at Crozon Park in Sligo on Sunday was put to him.

He told the court Karaczyn was charged less than 45 minutes after he was detained at Ballymote Garda station at around 7pm on Wednesday.

During an exchange with Karaczyn’s barrister Keith O’grady, Sgt Cathal Duffy confirmed the accused had been arrested on Sunday night.

The court heard the Polish man was interviewed on Monday with questioning continuing through the night until he was released without charge on Tuesday morning.

CO-OPERATED

Mr O’grady told Judge Kevin Kilraine that within three hours the accused returned voluntarily to the Garda station.

He said his client co-operated and made further matters known to gardai, after which Natalia’s body was found.

Sgt Duffy confirmed that was correct. As the deceased woman was the accused’s wife, Mr O’grady felt his client should be put on suicide watch during his time in custody.

He said members of Natalia’s family were in attendance and wanted the court to know they were there to support the accused and agreed with this course of action.

Judge Kilraine said it was appropriate to place Karaczyn on suicide watch and remanded him in custody to appear at Harristown District Court today.

Natalia’s funeral will take place this morning at 11.30 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Sligo.

Her remains will be taken afterwards to Lakelands Crematorium in Co Cavan.
