Jez: May’s a bad Millionaire bet

Potter star kept demanding Call the Midwife spell

Jeremy with May and Richard Hammond Jeremy Clarkson says one of his Grand Tour co-hosts wouldn’t win even a grand on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

Ahead of the show’s comeback this weekend, its host said: “James May would never get to £1,000. He wouldn’t gamble. He’d take three hours to answer every question. He’d get lost on the way to the studio and he doesn’t know anything.

“Hammond’s quite clever. Weirdly it’s the opposite to what you think watching.”

Well, Jeremy, it remains to be seen if it’s a stupid idea to replace Chris Tarrant... MIRIAM Margolyes has finally landed a part in Call the Midwife after badgering bosses for years.

The Harry Potter star, 76, will play feisty Sister Mildred in the Christmas special, and will then become a regular guest star.

An insider said: “Miriam’s been asking for a role for years. She’s a huge fan and we’re thrilled an appropriate part’s come up.” Sister Mildred arrives unexpectedly at Nonnatus House, her hands full with four Hong Kong orphans being adopted as part of the World Refugee Project.

She quickly makes her mark and finds herself in the running to be new Mother Superior, much to the relief of Sister Julienne ( Jenny Agutter) who doesn’t fancy the role for herself. Also joining as regulars are Fenella Woolgar as Sister Hilda, Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances and Georgie Glen as Dr Turner’s indomitable new receptionist Miss Higgins. Helen George will return as Trixie.

Creator Heidi Thomas said: “We never run out of stories, and never run out of love.”

As series eight starts, it’s 1964 and with the two new Sisters, Nonnatus House feels full once more after the sad death of Barbara at the end of the last series and departure of Patsy to be with girlfriend Delia.

Last year’s festive special topped ratings with 9.5million viewers.

Audience for second episode of The Split on BBC1. It’s down 800,000 but at least the audience didn’t split in half.
