SF calls for action on tax dodge bosses
THE Government has been accused of failing to go after rogue bosses who use bogus self-employed workers to dodge paying tax.
Sinn Fein’s David Cullinane said tough new laws are needed to tackle the problem.
The call came after the Government announced it is to launch an awareness campaign on false self-employment.
There are growing concerns about the rise in employees deprived of entitlements by being David Cullinane forced to work as self-employed. They can lose out on holiday pay, sick pay, the national minimum wage and they will not be eligible for redundancy pay.
Rogue bosses who use this widespread practice can make huge savings on PRSI and other employment law provisions. Deputy Cullinane said it is not good enough for Social Protection Minister Regina Dharma at Fota Wildlife Park in Cork Doherty to launch a public awareness campaign on the issue when what is needed is tough new laws.
He added: “Bogus self-employment is a growing problem and is rife in a number of sectors including construction and media.
“The minister and the Government are aware of the problem, as are the thousands of workers forced into self-employment.
“While a public information campaign may have some value, what is required

As Minister Doherty announced the campaign on RTE, it has emerged the national broadcaster is increasingly using self-employed workers.
Mr Cullinane said: “One in four employees at RTE are now on such contracts.
“While this is of benefit and is done with the agreement of a small number of those employees, the vast majority are coerced into signing such contracts.

To date, Fota Wildlife Park has donated €30,000 to tiger conservation.
