Number of ‘mischievous mammals’ being kept as pets soars in Ireland

- BY TREVOR QUINN

FERRETS are the latest pet craze sweeping the country as their fun and mischievous nature has seen demand soar, an expert has claimed.

The mammals, which are related to minks and weasels, are popular in the US and some other European countries and now Ireland is following the trend.

Agnes Puskorius, who runs a community called Irish Ferrets, has tried to dismiss any suggestion the animals are wild and she said they can make ideal pets for people. Agnes Puskorius with pet ferrets The Lithuanian photographer, who has lived in Ireland for 15 years, said: “Ferrets are loads of fun.

“If I had to live the rest of my life with just one species of pets under the roof, ferret would be it. They also can be a lot of work.

“They are fun pets but they also tend to be high maintenance. “They require a good deal knowledge and tonnes of patience.” Ms Puskorius is bringing her two ferrets Avadon and Migaloo to of Waterford Country Fair in Portlaw on June 10 and will be introducing children to the fun-loving creatures.

She said: “I’m looking forward sharing my knowledge.

“People will have a chance to pet them and get a picture taken with them.

“My boys love attention, love meeting new people and being fussed over.”

Ms Puskorius added while ferrets may look like rodents the reality is much different in terms of their behaviour.

She said: “Ferrets are carnivores. A lot of people tend to think they are rodents, but that is what ferrets eat in the wild.

“People are less and less shocked nowadays when I tell them I have ferrets. It was nearly unheard of 10 years ago.” to
