Irish baseball star’s joy as he plays for Mets

Room to improve star dermot pays emotional tribute to brave 15-yr-old

PJ Conlon A BASEBALL player born in Ireland has rewritten the history books after playing for the New York Mets.

PJ Conlon moved from the Falls Road in Belfast to California with his family when he was two years old.

Now, 22 years later, he is making a name for himself in Major League Baseball.

On Monday night PJ became the first Irish MLB player since Cork man Joe Cleary made an appearance in 1945.

PJ was drafted in to the Mets team for their game against the Cincinnati Reds after a regular pitcher was ruled out due to injury.

He said: “I’ve gotten unbelievab­le support.

“You could see them [fans] in the stands, waving the Irish flags. It means a lot.” Michael Stokes

DERMOT Bannon has shared a heart-wrenching tribute to Michael Stokes after news of his tragic death emerged on Monday.

The 15-year-old appeared in an episode of RTE’S Room To Improve alongside the TV architect before becoming an iconic star of the show.

Dermot said Michael leaves a “very big void” in the world.

He told RTE Lifestyle: “I’m heartbroke­n for his parents Ann and Barry, his family and anyone who knew him.

“Michael was such a big character with a huge heart filled with fun, joy and excitement. He leaves a very big void.

“I saw how he touched so many lives – those he knew and the many he never met.”

“I feel so known him.

“He taught me so many things about life but, most of all, don’t get caught up in all the things you can’t do or have no control over.

have Michael also appeared on The Late Late Show with his foster father Barry and host Ryan Tubridy also paid tribute to the “magic whirlwind”. He said: “He was an unforgetta­ble soul and we are all so sad today.

“Thinking of Ann, Barry and all Michael’s family and friends. The world is that bit diminished without him.” Michael’s removal will take place today at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Seabury, Malahide, arriving for 10am Funeral Mass.

This will be followed by burial in Dardistown Cemetery.

Only family flowers are permitted and donations, if desired, are asked to be made to Temple Street Hospital.
