JOHNNY Vegas and his Irish wife Maia Dunphy have split just seven years after tying the knot.

The couple announced the news yesterday in a joint statement they published on Twitter.

They said: “It is with a heavy heart we want to let you know that we separated some time ago last year.

“We are telling people now because speculation is unhelpful at best, and dangerous at worst.

“As we think is obvious, we continue to fully support each other; there is no acrimony, no story and no one else involved.

“We have never played out our relationship publicly, so we don’t feel it’s too much to ask for privacy now.

“We also ask people to be mindful that there are two children involved, and their welfare is our main concern now. Thank you. X.”

The couple have a two-year-old son, Tom, who was born in 2015. At the time, comedian Johnny announced news of his arrival with typical humour, telling fans: “He’s got his mother’s eyes and my taste in footwear. Tom Laurence, 7lb 2 ounces of nonstop pooing.”

And 41-year-old broadcaster Maia from Dalkey, Co Dublin, announced the happy news separately, telling followers: “Our new man has his dad’s habits already. “Tom Laurence arrives at a civilised hour after lunch. 7lbs2.”

In 2015, 46-year-old Johnny admitted he lied to Maia about his eating habits on a special episode of Celebrity Juice. Johnny, who was dressed as Pugsley Addams from The Addams Family, admitted: “I keep a bag of pork scratchings in the car and don’t tell my wife about them.

“And I have actually, on one occasion, took a wet wipe over my tongue so she didn’t know.

“She says it’s bad for me and keeps insisting that I get life insurance.” Johnny also has a 12-year-old son from his first marriage.
