IT’S A HOLIDAY OF A LIFELINE

- BY PAT NOLAN

ROLL on the summer holidays, says Cork hurler Alan Cadogan.

As a teacher, Cadogan will be able to use the time off to aid his recovery between games in the hectic new Munster schedule, with the Rebels starting against Clare on Sunday.

“I am counting down the days,” he said. “Come the first of June, we will be getting our holidays so we will be coming into the game against Limerick.

“Hopefully, we will be in good contention then so will be looking forward to it.”

It is anticipated many players will take time off work between games to help recovery.

Cadogan said: “Fellas who have good, understanding employers, I can see them taking the Monday off to get recovery because you know how intense a Championship game is, fellas can’t even walk or get out of bed the Monday, and then going out a week later, it is going to be a challenge.

“That recovery is the most challenging part of the week, because the work is done and you might just go through some video analysis and a small bit of training, the Tuesday or Wednesday, and then you are out again at the weekend.

“A huge challenge but that is where the management come in.”

In the past Cadogan has been involved in the Cork football panel, featuring for them in the 2016 Championship after the hurlers’ early exit that summer, but he doubts it’s a path he’ll take again.

“I’m 25, an age where this is your peak years. The years don’t be long going, and the dual thing is ruled out, really.

“It’s just not possible anymore, the game’s after changing over the last two or three years, the speed of it, the recovery is shortened.

“This year it’s week in, week out so I don’t think playing both’s an option.”
