A MAN who harassed RTE newsreader Sharon Ni Bheolain has been jailed for three years.
Conor O’hora pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to harassing the 47-year-old between March 27, 2013 and January 7, 2014.
Passing sentence yesterday, Judge Martin Nolan condemned his “insidious form of harassment” and “debasing behaviour” and handed down a four-and-a-half year term with the final 18 months suspended.
The 41-year-old also admitted knowingly possessing child porn on a mobile phone and on a computer hard drive on February 18, 2014.
The court heard O’hora, of Heather Walk, Portmarnock, North Co Dublin, posted more than 30 modified photos of Ms Ni Bheolain on a website reachable through a Google search of her name. As well posting the sexually explicit doctored images of the newsreader he engaged in 40 sexually explicit and violent online conversations with a co-accused.
Some of those related to Ms Ni Bheolain, while others were about three identified children.
Ordering O’hora not to seek contact Ms Ni Bheolain in any way, he added: “The information on her will be out there forever.
“I’ve no doubt it caused considerable distress to the complainant and her family.
“It was reprehensible and he [O’hora] should be thoroughly ashamed.”
The judge described the pornographic images and conversations as “sordid and pretty disgusting”.
Det Gda Padriag Hanley previously told the court O’hora’s discussions were “extremely sexually explicit and violent”. O’hora told gardai: “It’s not something I’m proud of, it’s a fantasy thing. It’s ridiculous to think she would have any interest in me.” The court heard his co-accused received an 18-month suspended sentence earlier this year at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, which is being appealed by the DPP for undue leniency.
