Tribe hero Heaney’s moving on
GALWAY goal-scoring hero Johnny Heaney said they have parked their win over Mayo and all their attention is on the Connacht semifinal against Sligo.
Heaney struck late for the only goal of the game in Sunday’s 1-12 to 0-12 victory in Castlebar, but has played down his role in the latest win over their rivals.
“The only reason the chance was there was because of all the work that was done in the build-up, if it wasn’t for what the boys did I wouldn’t have got the chance.
“It was great to see it go in but there is no point in dwelling on things, you have got to move on to the next challenge,” said the 23-year old.
It’s Heaney’s third year on the Galway team and each summer they have knocked Mayo out of the Connacht Championship, a fact which his father
James, a native of Carramore in Co Mayo, is often reminded about.
Before that Connacht semi-final against Sligo on Sunday fortnight, Heaney and all of the Galway squad will be in club action this weekend for the opening round of the Galway SFC.
Heaney’s Killannin — the same club as Galway boss Kevin Walsh — take on Salthill/knocknacarra.
“That’s another reason the win over Mayo had to be put to bed quickly. There is a full round on this weekend and then it’s back with the county.
“It was great to get the win over Mayo but there is a lot of stuff we feel we can work on,” added Heaney speaking at the announcement in Loughrea of a new five-year sponsorship deal between Supermac’s and Galway.
