UNITED MUST FIND MOUR FLAIR... OR FANS WILL REVOLT

- BY JOHN CROSS

JOSE MOURINHO could finish the season with the FA Cup and second place in the Premier League.

For most clubs, that would represent an excellent campaign and one which would please fans and hierarchy alike.

But if Manchester United beat Chelsea – and it is a big if – at Wembley then, when the celebrations are finished and the hangovers over, we are likely to have another debate.

This is, after all, Manchester United and you are expected not just to win, but win in style. It is the United way. And that is the problem facing Mourinho (right).

The United boss is more pragmatist than entertainer and despite his knack of winning trophies, many fans will go to Wembley without the excitement of the good old days.

The truth is that United finished a distant second with 81 points, which won Leicester the title two years ago. But Manchester City set a record 100 points this season and even Chelsea were crowned champions with 93 last year.

This United squad are average by the club’s own standards, with some of their best players –

Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia – playing out of their natural positions.

Mourinho bought Alexis Sanchez (top) in January and he is a class player.

United must now build on that this summer and if they do beat Chelsea tomorrow, this is their chance to transform the squad.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred is a big target, they want Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and new full-backs – Juventus leftback Alex Sandro is on their wish list.

That is the calibre of player who will push United on and arguably make them bigger challengers to City. Next season is vital for Mourinho, a manager renowned for never staying long anywhere.

If next season is unspectacular maybe it will be Mourinho’s last at Old Trafford, despite him signing a new contract not so long ago.

The Mourinho of old at Chelsea – possibly in his first spell at Stamford Bridge – built winning teams with flair players rather than flair teams with winners.

But Chelsea had the likes of Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Damien Duff and Frank Lampard.

United need more of those sorts of players – their fans demand it.
