COLE: LUK HOW MANY GOALS HE COULD GET

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL

ROMELU LUKAKU could score 40 goals a season if Manchester United played to his strengths, according to Andy Cole.

Lukaku, set to return for United in tomorrow’s FA Cup Final against Chelsea, hit 27 goals in his debut season following his £75million switch from Everton.

But United legend Cole is convinced the Belgian would have the same return as Liverpool’s Mo Salah – who won the Golden Boot – if Jose Mourinho’s side played to their striker’s strong points.

“Lukaku’s had a massive season,” said Cole (right). “He’s been consistent and not had the opportunity to have much rest, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic being injured then moving on.

“So he’s done well to get 27 goals in a team that doesn’t create many chances. But I still don’t believe he’s actually playing to his strengths.

“If you look at the way he played at Everton, it’s totally different. If he starts taking advantage of what he has as an athlete – his strength and power – and runs in behind and stretches teams, you’ll get even more out of him.

“If you look at what

Salah has done at

Liverpool, a lot goes through him. They play to his strengths. They give the ball to him early doors and he’ll crack on and nick a goal. He’s ended up with 43 goals this season.” ■■Andy Cole was speaking on behalf of Marathonbet, Manchester United’s official global betting partner. www. marathonbet.co.uk
