Walkout on Dunphy in pod debate
COLUMNIST John Waters stormed out of an interview with Eamon Dunphy on the abortion referendum, calling him a “f*****g b****cks”.
The journalist, who is campaigning for a No vote, shouted at the broadcaster after nearly 15 minutes of a chat on The Stand podcast.
He told the host to “f*** off”, saying it had not been a “fair interview”.
Dunphy had lined up Waters from the
No side and The Irish Times’ Una Mullally for the Yes side for episode 167 of his twice-weekly podcast.
Towards the end of the debate, Waters took issue with the conversation turning to the use of abortion pills.
In between protests from Dunphy, he said: “This is not about abortion pills.
“We have 40 minutes to do an
interview about this, so can we talk about the issue or else I’m going home? “I’m fed up of this. You told me this would be a fair interview, it is not a fair interview.
“You’re a b******s, you’re a f***ing b******s. You can f*** off, Eamon.
“You told me you wanted to support, you wanted to talk about the No thing... Talk to Una Mullally. F*** off.” Waters can then be heard stomping out of the studio.
Dunphy said afterwards: “OK folks, that’s what happened. It’s very unfortunate and I’m very sad about it.
“The intention was to have somebody representing the No side and to balance that with somebody, Una Mullally, an Irish Times journalist, representing Yes.
“So the No side have disappeared. I’m glad we played it out because people can make their own mind up.”
