PIERCE Brosnan has revealed his wife hated the beard he grew for his role in TV series The Son.

The former James Bond star sported heavy facial hair to play Texas rancher Eli Mccullough in the western drama.

Brosnan, from Co Meath, admitted his journalist wife Keely Shaye Smith wasn’t a fan of his new look.

The 65-year-old said: “She wants her Irish boy Pierce back again. Not some old goat.” Speaking to GQ magazine, he opened up about playing a cowboy in the show, saying it’s role he holds close to his heart. Brosnan added: “I’ve always enjoyed the history and culture of America especially growing up in Ireland, the Western was a very strong format.

“So it was somewhat in my subconscious – the cowboys and the Indians of life.”

The father of five also said he was inspired by his heritage for the role. Brosnan, who grew up in Navan, added: “I melded my Irishness with the soul of this character.

“The Texas life has been good to me, and I have a great affinity with it now, this lovely landscape of culture.

“It’s very unique and it’s been a very powerful experience.” With Hollya wood rocked by the Time’s Up and #Metoo movements in the past year, the actor credited his Irish upbringing in making him “one of the good guys”.

He said: “I think one tries to be good. I think it’s good to be good. It’s easier to be good than bad.

“Growing up in Ireland and growing up in the Catholic church might have had something to do with it. And also a childhood which was fairly solitary.”
