IRELAND CALL-UP A DREAM

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

CALLUM ROBINSON acknowledges it is “understandable” that some fans may question his motives for declaring for Ireland.

But the Preston North End attacker insists he is determined to fulfill a dream that is two years in the making.

Northampton-born Robinson made his senior team breakthrough off the bench in yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Celtic in Scott Brown’s testimonial.

There were no caps on offer and his paperwork has still to be finalised so Robinson will play no part in the upcoming friendlies against France and USA.

He qualifies through his late grandmother who was from Monaghan and is eager to make real inroads with the Boys in Green.

But having played underage football for England up to under-20 level, the 23-year-old appreciates some may see the move as career opportunism.

Robinson said last night: “That’s understandable as I was born in England but I’m committed to playing for Ireland.

“Back in March I said I was available but actually for a year or two I never opened my mouth and said it but it was always in my mind.

“To get this little opportunity for the last couple of days was fantastic. We got more stuff over the line with the paperwork but we’re just waiting on one or two more things.

“It’s a little bit annoying as I could be training with the boys for a few more weeks rather than just two days.”
