Irishman killed in hols balcony plunge horror

- BY GERARD COUZENS

AN Irish tourist has reportedly died after plunging from a Magaluf apartment block.

The 20-year-old, named locally as Thomas Owen Hughes, is said to have arrived in Majorca, Spain, on Saturday.

Police launched an investigation after his body was found at the Eden Roc apartment block yesterday morning.

One source said: “A neighbour alerted police at around 11am saying they could see a person lying on the ground.

“He fell from a height of around 20metres.”

Another source added the circumstances were still being investigated and it was too early to reach any conclusions as to why it had happened.

It was not immediately clear yesterday if Mr Hughes died some time before his body was spotted. A duty court in Palma Beach in Majorca has been placed in charge of the investigation into his death and is awaiting a full police report.

Mr Hughes’ body is said to have been identified by friends and a postmortem is expected to be carried out today in the Majorcan capital.

Investigators from the Civil Guard were on the ground yesterday.

Neighbours are thought to have told officers they heard a lot of noise at around 4am, but it is unclear if it is connected to the death plunge.

Paramedics were unable to save Mr Hughes and he was pronounced dead at the spot where he was found.

His body was taken away just before 1.30pm local time. The Eden Roc apartment block is the same one at which Scot Natalie Cormack died in April after falling from a seventh-floor ledge. Local reports said Mr Hughes was staying at a nearby hotel and not Eden Roc.

Ms Cormack, a 19-year-old Magaluf worker from West Kilbride in Ayrshire, laid undiscovered for several hours before she was found dead on April 27.

She lost her balance after trying to get into the building when she found the door locked and discovered she didn’t have her key.
