MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING DAD OF FOUR IN ‘PUB ROW’
Accused remanded in custody

At a special sitting of Mallow District Court yesterday, Michael Dineen was remanded in custody over the death of Patrick “Ginty” O’donnell,
Dineen, of Ard Mhuileann, Mitchelstown, Co Cork, is accused of murdering the 37-year-old at Willie Andies bar on New Square, in the town last Friday.
The 27-year-old was charged by detectives yesterday morning and taken to court in the afternoon.
He appeared wearing a grey and blue Puma tracksuit and as he left pulled the hoodie up and covered his face with a blue fleece.
He made no comment during the short hearing.
Det Sgt James O’shea told Judge Aingeal Ni Chonduin Dineen made no reply to the charge when it was put to him after caution at 1.25pm yesterday.
The accused was represented by solicitor Cathal Lombard who applied for free legal aid stating his client was in receipt of social welfare and this was granted. He also asked the judge to recommend Dineen receive medical care while in prison as “he was on medication before his arrest”.
The judge also acceded this request. Insp Michael Corbett, for the State, told the court Dineen should not be freed at this stage.
Judge Ni Chonduin remanded him in custody to appear again at Fermoy
District Court on Friday.
Mr O’donnell was a well to known member of the Traveller community in the Mitchelstown area and was known to locals as “Ginty”.
He had become a father for the fourth time in recent months. He and his family lived in the Stag Park area of the town.
There was a large Garda presence around the court amid fears of reprisals.
A postmortem was carried out on the body of Mr O’donnell at Cork University Hospital at the weekend. The results were not released for operational reasons.
