DJOK’S SHOCK

Novak stunned by Cecchinato and then says he may miss Wimbledon

- By NEIL MCLEMAN

Marco cecchinato became the first italian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final for 40 years with a fairtytale win over novak Djokovic.

But after his worst-ever defeat at the French Open, Djokovic threatened to snub Wimbledon.

Sicilian 25-year-old Cecchinato had an 18-month ban for match-fixing overturned on a technicality in 2016 – and had never won a Grand Slam match before this tournament.

And despite receiving a point penalty for going to the locker room to change his shoes during the match, the world No.72 claimed his fourth match point in an epic tie-break to win 6-3 7-6 1-6

7-6.

Cecchinato, who broke down in tears after his victory, said: “It is amazing. It is unbelievable for me.

There have been many sacrifices but it is now a wonderful moment. It is tough to explain the emotion.”

Cecchinato – emulating the achievement of compatriot Corrado Barazzutti, who reached the last four at Roland Garros in 1978 – is the lowest-ranked man to reach the last four of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2008. In the semi-final he faces Dominic Thiem, who beat No.2 seed Alex Zverev in straight sets.

Djokovic, who won the last of his 12 Grand Slams here in 2016, had treatment on his neck and leg during his shock loss.

Before walking out of his brief press conference, the world No.22 said: “I struggled from the beginning with a little injury.

“I don’t know if I’m going to play on grass. I’m just not thinking about tennis at the moment.”
