THE Young Offenders star Shane Casey has revealed he had to rein in his excitement after finding out a racehorse has been named after his comedy character.

The Cork actor plays fan favourite Billy Murphy in the hit RTE and BBC series. Casey has told of how The Young Offenders’ cult following has extended into sport, with trainer Nigel Tinkler naming one of his mounts I’m Billy Murphy after a quote in the last episode of the series.

Shane said: “I’ve a racehorse now so I’ve officially made it.

“I don’t have the racehorse. I don’t own it, I have no shares in it – I’d like some.” Casey impressed viewers with his singing voice when his character performed After All while holding a bus hostage in the season finale.

The star admitted that while he had tried musical theatre before The Young Offenders, his past efforts weren’t as successful.

He told the Ian Dempsey Show on Today FM: “I did a couple of musicals, badly I might add. I was the lad at the back who couldn’t dance. My first show was Singing In The Rain… I didn’t have the lead, I’ll put it that way.”

■ Casey will return to the stage with his new play Wet Paint in Cork’s The Everyman Theatre from June 25 to 30. Shane Casey FRENCH lawmakers have voted to ban mobile phones in primary and middle schools.

The government said the legislation would improve concentration in class, while helping to prevent cyber bullying.

Critics claimed the ban will be difficult to enforce.
