Woman killed by car as she walked along road with her young niece Mary, 53, pronounced dead at scene

Gerry Kelly and Prince Charles in North Belfast yesterday A WOMAN was killed instantly after she was hit by a car while out walking with her young niece.

The victim named locally as Mary Toomey, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The child, who was riding a bicycle, was not physically injured although she was badly shocked.

Mrs Toomey was hit by a car on the Mitchelsto­wn to Cahir road at Kilcoran, Co Tipperary, on Monday just after 8pm.

It is believed the mother of one adult son was walking with her niece when she was struck.

The driver of the car a man in his late 20s was also uninjured.

Mrs Toomey was well known in the area and worked as a medical secretary at the Convent Road Medical Practice in Cahir.

Local people described her as “a keen walker who regularly walked the route”.

The road between Tincurry and Kilcoran remained closed for most of yesterday morning while a forensic examinatio­n of the scene took place and was reopened around midday.

The Mayor of Clonmel Borough District Catherine Carey described the accident as a “dreadful tragedy”. The Sinn Fein councillor said: “This is a dreadful tragedy and everyone is shocked and saddened.

“My deepest condolence­s to the family who must be supported at this time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”

People living in the area described the road involved as very busy and was the main route to Cork before the M8 was opened.

While the road is straight where the accident took place some drivers said it is difficult to see along the route in the evenings because of the setting sun when travelling in the Cork direction.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was travelling in the area at the time to contact them at Cahir Garda station on 052 744563

Inspector James White said: ‘’We are appealing to anybody who was on that road between 8pm and 8.30pm on Monday night to contact us.

“In particular we are appealing to any passing motorists, cyclists or pedestrian­s to make contact.

“We are particular­ly appealing to any motorists with dash cam footage to contact us.”
