LES BLEUS RELYING ON OLI’S GOALS

- BY DARREN LEWIS

DIDIER DESCHAMPS is ready to start with Olivier Giroud against Peru after France’s fortuitous win over Australia.

Paul Pogba’s deflected effort snatched victory for Les Bleus last Saturday, but the country’s fans were unimpressed.

Giroud (below), a substitute against the Socceroos, has netted 31 times in 75 matches for his country. And Deschamps has suggested his side would have to adapt to the Chelsea striker’s style of play if he does start against Peru. “The problem with Olivier is very often when he plays, he plays in his own register,” said the France boss.

“He’s not in the same register as the others. But when he’s not there, we realise how useful he is.”

The 49-year-old – a member of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning team – said Peru should not be underestimated.

“They have excellent players up front, some very fast players,” said Deschamps.

And Peru insist they will not be bullied by France when the two teams meet in their must-win game today.

The Incas were beaten 1-0 by Denmark in their first game.

But coach Ricardo Gareca said: “This match involves playing to our style and not letting France push us around.

“We are not going to be able to control France all the time, but we want to develop our style of play. We intend to win.”

Argentine Gareca admitted his men face a step up in class at the Ekaterinburg Arena.

But he insisted they would not be overawed.

“We are very used to being the underdog in this sort of situation,” he said. “We’re used to living on the edge. I think that we can beat any team.”
