Hit & run victim left dead at side of road

Pedestrian killed in weekend’s 2nd tragedy

GARDAI are appealing for witnesses after a man was found dead on the side of the road following a suspected hit-and-run.

The pedestrian, believed to be in his 30s, was killed in the incident at around 1.30am yesterday.

He was struck by a dark saloon car at Rathbeale Road in Swords, North Dublin.

The vehicle drove off and headed towards Ashbourne in Co Meath.

Witnesses or anyone with informatio­n is urged to contact Swords Garda station on 01 666 4700.

Meanwhile, officers are investigat­ing the death of a cyclist found lying on a roadside in Co Clare on Saturday afternoon.

The 58-year-old man from Dublin was taking part in a charity event when it is believed he suffered a heart attack or other medical problem.

It is understood the man’s wife was also taking part in the cycle.

A group was travelling from Cork to Gort, Co Galway, where they were due to spend the night before continuing their journey yesterday.

Tragedy struck shortly after 5pm as they were travelling along the R458, the old N18 Ennis to Galway road.

As they approached the Clare/galway border they noticed one of their members wasn’t with the main group.

Some cyclists turned back and discovered the man lying in an unresponsi­ve state on the ROBBIE Williams amazed fans when Taylor Swift invited him onstage to sing his song Angels with her.

An off-duty paramedic, who had been passing the scene, stopped and tried to resuscitat­e the cyclist until two ambulances and an advanced paramedic rapid response vehicle arrived with gardai.

Their efforts continued in the ambulance on the way to University Hospital Limerick.

However, the man was pronounced dead a short time later. A section of the road was closed for a technical examinatio­n.

A Garda spokesman confirmed the death, while not suspicious, will be investigat­ed and a postmortem will be held.

In a third incident, two bikers were injured in a crash yesterday.

Both men were taken to Cavan General Hospital following the collision involving two motorbikes on a rural road near Killydoon at around 2pm. Their injuries were not serious.
