Shot Darren dad: I’ve lost my son and best friend

- BY STEPHEN MCDERMOTT

Darren Kearns THE father of a man shot dead outside a restaurant told last night how he lost his son and his best friend.

Darren Kearns, 33, was blasted several times in his car by a lone gunman as he left the Rising Phoenix on Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin with his wife on December 30, 2015.

He had just been released from prison after serving time for his part in the transportation of €1.8million worth of cannabis in 2010.

His father Philip told last night’s Crimecall on RTE One: “People say you can’t be a father and a best friend. We were and that’s how close we were as a family and a unit.

“The only thing we have now is these photographs... memories and a headstone.”

SHOCK

Darren’s mother Frances also spoke about the evening her son was murdered, saying: “It’s very hard to look at your child lying in the cold night – lying on the ground.”

The family say they are are still in shock at what happened two and a half years later.

His sister Martina said: “It’s like a nightmare, like something in a movie, not the reality. This shouldn’t be happening to us. He didn’t deserve that.”

Frances also appealed for help to catch her son’s killers.

She added: “If you know anything, as small as it is, please, please just come forward.”

Gardai are appealing to those who may have information about Darren’s murder to call Crimecall on 1800 40 50 60 or Blanchardstown Garda station on 01 666 7000.
