RORY: IT’S OK.. BUT IT SHOULD BE FAR BETTER

- BY KEN LAGAN

RORY MCILROY wishes his game was in a better place heading into the Open Championship on July 19-22.

Mcilroy finished 11 under par at the Travelers Championship at the weekend, finishing in T-12 position alongside Ryan Blaum and Jason Day. Bubba Watson won the event with a score of 17 under.

However, despite rounds of 64-69-69-67, the world No6 wasn’t overly pleased with the entire weekend and admitted he has work to do ahead of the third Major of the year at Carnoustie Golf Links next month.

“It’s okay,” Mcilroy said of his current game. “Look, it’s never that far away.

“I can hold it together and play okay, but just need to do a little bit of work and get my confidence up, if anything.

“I’m just a little uncomfortable over the ball at the minute. Just knowing my swing isn’t quite where I want it to be and I’m still working on it.

“Hopefully just some more practice and a few more reps and seeing some better shots on the course I’ll be a little more comfortable going into the third major there.”

Despite Mcilroy’s unhappiness at certain aspects of his game, he’s had some success this season, including a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitionational.

Second place finishes at both the BWA PGA Championships and Omega Dubai Desert Classic serve as more optimism that he isn’t too far away from claiming his fifth career Major.

Mcilroy’s next event is at the Irish Open on July 5 at the Ballyliffin Golf Club.
