PETER STRINGER has retired from rugby at the age of 40.

The Cork man joined Worcester at the beginning of last season on a six-month contract and last played in December. The Munster and Ireland legend is a Grand Slam winner from 2009, an achievement that followed the two Heineken Cups won with his native province in 2006 and ‘08. The scrumhalf played 98 times for Ireland between his Test debut in 2000 and 2011, and was involved in the 2003 and ‘07 World Cups, before the emergence of Conor Murray as his successor. Stringer played 230 times for Munster over 15 years, forming a hugely effective half-back partnership for much of that time with Ronan O’gara.

He won three Celtic Leagues with the Reds as well. In a bid to play more regularly, he joined Saracens and Newcastle Falcons on loan before joining Bath five years ago. His next move was to Sale Sharks in 2015 and was the club’s player of the season that year before going on to join Worcester last July.

“From the age of 5 all I ever dreamed of was playing rugby. I cannot describe how it feels to have lived that dream for nearly all of my life,” he Tweeted.

“The journey has been an uncompromising obsession filled with memories I will cherish.

“To the coaches who never saw my size as a disadvantage, thank you. “To my teammates who motivated and inspired me, thank you.”
