Leo calls for Britain to up its game for Brexit talks
Taoiseach Varadkar TAOISEACH Leo Varadkar yesterday called for British progress on Brexit during this week’s EU Summit.
He said talks had been “disappointing” so far and they have to “intensify” with time to strike a deal fast running out.
Mr Varadkar arrives in Brussels this morning and Brexit and the border question are expected to be top of the agenda.
There has been no movement from Britain on the issue in the two years since Britain voted to leave the EU.
Mr Varadkar said: “Time is running out for the Withdrawal Agreement to be concluded satisfactorily by the October European Council.
MESSAGE
“I expect EU leaders to send a strong message to the UK that negotiations with the Task Force need to intensify.
“The lack of progress in the negotiations on the Withdrawal Agreement has been disappointing.
“We still need to see detailed proposals from the UK on how it intends to deliver on the clear commitments it made in December and March.
“Ireland is grateful to our EU partners for their ongoing strong support.
“The European Council has stated nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. Meanwhile, our preparations and contingency planning continue and are intensifying.”
