Eco-friendly dentists pull metal fillings after 150yrs
Paul qualifies as personal trainer after losing 10st
Dental work DENTISTS are phasing out metal fillings from next month – in a bid to help the environment.
Traditional amalgams cause mercury waste to be released against EU rules.
Children under 15, pregnant women and breastfeeding mums will be first to get the new fillings.
Irish Dental Association boss Dr Kieran O’connor said: “Placing or removing amalgam fillings can cause mercury waste to be released into the environment and that is why its use is being phased down.
“It will continue to be a treatment option for all other patients for the time being.”
But dentists insisted people with metal fillings have nothing to worry about. Dr Eamon Croke, who helped produce the IDA’S leaflet on the issue, said dental amalgam fillings are safe, strong and long lasting.
He added: “Many people who have amalgam fillings may be wondering about their safety.
“Dental amalgam has been in use for over 150 years and its safety and reliability has been well researched.”
Paul after half marathon self-worth and I know now that I can achieve anything if I believe in myself.”
At his lowest ebb, Paul’s weight ballooned to more than 22st. Now it is a healthy 12st.
Things had come to a head after he broke his ankle when he was drunk one night and it needed surgery. He said: “I had no choice but to go home to Ireland.”
On his return he told his parents about his self-harming and he began working at a hotel in Cork that had a Slimming World group and he decided to join.
His weight loss and healthier life began and yesterday he achieved another personal goal.
Now as a personal trainer he will continue to share his lifestyle changes and advice and said others can make similar changes too.
Paul added: “This is so much more than a certificate or a piece of paper to me, it is a symbol of the positive changes that I have made in my life.”
