A drought warning has also been issued by Met Eireann for this week, which is due to expire at midnight Friday.

A month-long hosepipe ban for the Greater Dublin Area kicked in today and is likely to be extended to other parts of the country in coming days. Widespread restrictio­ns are in place as water levels drop to a 40-year low.

The utility company said: “Irish Water is calling on the public to continue to take sustained action to conserve water as weather conditions remain warm and the drought is increasing­ly reducing capacity in rivers and boreholes, while our production plants struggle to meet increasing demand.

“As the warm weather continues, the demand on water supplies is outstrippi­ng the supply across the country. The weather has been dry since late February this year with Met Eireann reporting the level of rain that has fallen is on par with 1976 when a major drought was in place.”

Across the country Irish Water has 39 supplies under night-time restrictio­ns and more than 100 at risk due to high consumptio­n.

The company is using tankers from larger schemes to top-up reservoirs where levels are falling.
