Dublin Bus cuts routes in shake-up

- BY GAVIN O’CALLAGHAN

DUBLIN Bus has announced plans to overhaul its service in a bid to reduce travel times while easing congestion.

The proposal was unveiled yesterday and will see the number of lines cut overall, but will require some passengers to change buses to get to the city centre.

The National Transport Authority’s new Busconnects plan involves limiting the city to seven “superfrequent” spine routes while eleven “orbital” branch routes will run in areas other than the centre of town.

The NTA said passengers will still have less overall journey times, adding almost a million people will live within 400m of a stop that has a frequency of 15 minutes or better – which is an increase of 31%.

Chief Anne Graham said: “Redrawing the bus network has been a priority and was a key element of the overall Busconnects programme announced last year.

“We believe a system with greater scope for interconnection between routes, where connecting passengers don’t necessarily have to travel to the city centre, would be far more attractive and convenient.”

However, Labour’s transport spokesman Kevin Humphreys said: “For those who rely on Dublin Bus every day to get around our city, the changes must be affordable and efficient.” Dublin Bus
