LEO’S CROSS taoiseach blasts use of power

LEO Varadkar has warned public bodies to lead by example and not waste water while the country faces the prospect of a drought.

It was reported the Office of Public Works had been out this week power washing the Papal Cross in Phoenix Park.

This sparked outrage as the rest of Dublin and other parts of the country have been facing hosepipe bans during the heatwave.

Speaking from New York, the Taoiseach said: “I wasn’t aware of that, but absolutely, Government agencies and Government bodies should lead by example.

“We have enough water in the reservoirs but with this long, dry, hot summer continuing there is a risk we’ll run short later in the summer.

“So I’m appealing to everyone – householde­rs, businesses and absolutely Government bodies – to observe the hosepipe ban and to not use water unnecessar­ily and to conserve it.” Mr Varadkar also encouraged everyone to take personal responsibi­lity and be careful in the home and try to conserve water at every available opportunit­y, like when
