EAMONN STEPS DOWN

- BY PAT NOLAN

EAMONN BURNS has stepped down as Down senior football manager after three years in charge.

Burns, an All-ireland winner with the county in 1991 and ‘94, guided Down to the Ulster final last year, which they lost to Tyrone, but they largely struggled outside of that.

He inherited the job from Jim Mccorry, who had just won promotion to Division One, but they suffered immediate relegation in 2016 and made a swift Championship exit.

They steadied in Division Two last year after a lengthy losing streak and shocked Monaghan in the Ulster semi-final but dropped to Division Three this year and were well beaten by Donegal in Ulster before Cavan edged them out in the qualifiers last Saturday week.

Down chairman Sean Rooney said: “We are indebted to him for the time and effort he gave.

“Eamonn was very honourable at all times working tirelessly in pursuit of progress and success and he retains a great desire to see Down re-emerge as a force.”
