GAME-CHANGER FELLAINI’S NOT THE FALL GUY ANY MORE
MAROUANE FELLAINI has signed a new deal at Manchester United and made himself a national hero for Belgium – and now he has his eyes set on beating Brazil.
Fellaini, once the whipping boy of Old Trafford, has been blamed for everything over the last few years. But Jose Mourinho last week handed the 30-year-old a new two-year contract – and he celebrated by inspiring an incredible Belgium comeback against Japan. Belgium were 2-0 down when Fellaini and Nacer Chadli were thrown on in Rostov – and both scored in an incredible turn-around to win 3-2.
Now Fellaini (right) reckons his dream summer can get even better when he faces Brazil in a World Cup quarter-final on Friday.
“Yeah it’s been a very good week but the most important thing is we’re through to the quarter-finals,” he said.
“It will be tough, we know the quality of Brazil’s players. But we are a good group with good players and a good mentality. We’re more mature than before.
“We want to show everyone what we can do against Brazil.”
Fellaini was modest about his contribution in Rostov, saying: “Yes, I made an impact but Nacer did so, too. Sometimes it’s good to make a change.”
Belgium will have to defend better against the world
No.1s, but Fellaini isn’t worried. “They have
Neymar, but they’ve got Coutinho, Firmino and
Jesus too,” he said.
“It’s going to be a real test for us.”
